Haiyang city of Yantai in East China's Shandong province held an activity to put shrimp seeds into the Bohai Sea on May 7.
Jointly organized by the Haiyang government and Haisheng Aquatic Products Co, the public activity released around 20 million shrimp seeds to the sea aiming to protect the marine ecological environment, promote the quality of fish and increase fisherman's income.
This year's four month fishing moratorium, which began May 1, is the critical period for the growth and reproduction of marine life. The no-fishing season is to ensure sustainable development of its aquatic resources.
Located in the depths of the Yellow Sea, Yaiyang Island is about 140 kilometers to the northeast of downtown Dalian, Northeast China's Liaoning province.
Accordingly, the city held five social public fish releasing activities with more than 600 people involved and invested more than 250,000 yuan to put 230,000 fish into the sea, including black sea breams, sepia esculenta hoyles and Japanese flounders.
"We hope to call for more local residents and visitors to strengthen the awareness of fishery resources conservation and rehabilitation and to jointly protect the Marine ecological environment," said Mou Qingmei, the director of the Haiyang Qianliyan Island management office.
The Haiyang Island Fishery is one of China's four major fishing grounds, with rich marine resources such as trepang (a precious kind of sea cucumber), abalone and sea urchin.
