Integrating big data technology with business, government affairs and people's livelihoods, Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is often called "China's data valley", and provides a smart life for local people.

The Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone (Guiyang HIDZ), approved by the State Council and established in 1992, aims to become the center of "China's data valley" by 2020.

It has established a sophisticated industrial system of big data with the support of world-leading companies like Google, Dell, IBM and Alibaba. By the end of 2017, Guiyang HIDZ had gathered 4,003 companies engaged in big data and achieved business income of 45.16 billion yuan ($7.15 billion).

Big data has been widely applied in government management, businesses and people's livelihood in the Guiyang HIDZ.

China's first big data engineering laboratory was launched in the Guiyang HIDZ on May 24, 2017, expected to help improve government management efficiency. The lab has several functions, including collecting and analyzing administrative data, improving data privacy protection and applying big data technology to government decision making, clean government supervision, social management and public services.

The Guiyang Big Data Comprehensive Taxation Platform collects data from 34 government departments and tax information from various types of networks. According to the characteristics of Guiyang's tax collection and administration, 26 data analysis models are in place so the fiscal and taxation departments can effectively promote the quality and level of tax collection and management.

Yaguang Electronic, a pilot company of big data based in Guiyang HIDZ, relies on big data and industrial resources to improve its production line including R&D, design, manufacturing, operations and management, and sales and service. The improved intelligent production line was put into trial operation in June 2017, increasing the production of rectifier diodes to 56 million and realizing annual net profit of 7.84 million yuan ($1.23 million).

At the internet hospital of Longmaster Information and Technology Company, based in the Guiyang HIDZ, more than 70 doctors work in three shifts to treat up to 6,000 patients a day. The hospital, mainly using big data technology and cooperating with Guiyang No 6 Hospital, allows patients with non-critical symptoms to get instant and professional medical advice via smart phone or TV at home, which helps develop a habit of chronic disease management.
