Seventy Taiwan-born PhD students flocked to Shanghai on April 20 to attend a three-day exchange event with Shanghai universities with the aim of seeking jobs in the city.
The event, launched by the Shanghai Taiwan Compatriots Friendship Association (STCFA) and the Shanghai-Taiwan Exchange Commission of the Shanghai Chinese Overseas Friendship Association, was inspired by the 31 Taiwan-focused preferential measures issued by the mainland earlier this year, according to Lu Li'an, president of the STCFA.
The measures encourage Taiwan's talented personnel to come and work in the mainland. And the arrival of so many PhD students this time indicated the increasing exposure and influence of those measures in both Taiwan and the mainland.
Huang Chung-fu, a PhD graduate from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, sent out more than 10 resumes on April 20. He considered that there are a lot of opportunities in Shanghai and expected to find a teaching job in local universities.
A post-doctoral researcher surnamed Lee who works in a hospital in Kaohsiung said that the new preferential measures are quite appealing to young doctors in Taiwan and thought this exchange event is a very good opportunity to know the mainland's employment market.
Eighteen top universities in Shanghai including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University took part in the exchange event and introduced their talent needs and policies.
The Taiwan PhD students were also invited to visit Fudan, Tongji, and Jian Qiao universities and were impressed by the tour.
