Zhanjiang started using license plates reserved specifically for new energy vehicles on April 18, following the success of a pilot program carried out in five cities, in an effort to save energy and protect the environment.
The initiative will make it easier for the public to recognize new energy vehicles and will play an essential role in the development of the new energy industry, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement.
The new license plate is 40 millimeters wider than the standard blue plates and has one additional character. Smaller new energy vehicles will be issued plates with a green gradient, while larger vehicles will have green and yellow plates.
New energy car owners who already have a license plate can decide whether to change it or not. Those who continue to use the standard plates will still be registered in a database and subject to a different management system.
For new registrations, car owners can choose a plate number at the local traffic management department. Besides, they can also simply pick up one by navigating to https://ha.122.gov.cn or by using the smartphone app Jiaoguan 12123.
