The city of Ordos plans to plant 8 million trees this year, according to a recent notice issued by Ordos municipal government.
According to the notice, each banner and district in the city will be assigned a specific target as to the number of trees they have to plant this year.
For instance, the Kangbashi district will have to plant 100,000 trees; Dongsheng district needs to plant 900,000 trees; Juungar Banner needs to plant 1.3 million trees, and Ejin Horoo Banner, 800,000 trees.
The notice also says that each district and banner should have at least one tree planting base at national level, regional level, city level and district level respectively.
Three periods will be used to complete the task –– from March 15 to May 30; from June 30 to Aug 30, and from Sep 1 to 20.
In order to supervise the work, the local authorities in the banners and at district levels are required to report the progress of their work on a regular basis during the plantation period.
Officials who have failed to fulfill their obligations will be held accountable, according to the notice.
The government also proposes other ways to encourage the planting of trees, such as through donating money to the tree planting program or by helping care for the planted trees.
So far, Kangbashi district has already announced plans to plant 900,000 trees.
