Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong province will launch a toll payment app in May, offering expressway users a more efficient alternative to cash payments, or even the already-efficient electronic toll collection (ETC) system.

Drivers first download an app named 深圳e交通 released by Shenzhen Expressway Company and then link their car plate number to their bank account. The toll will be deducted from their account automatically after the tollgate identifies the plate number. The whole process takes less than 10 seconds, seven seconds faster than when done by a staff member, according to insiders.

The app is currently undergoing trial operations at tollgates on Shenzhen expressways. It also integrates other functions such as navigation, real-time traffic information and customer service.
