Established in September 2006, the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center resulted from a merger of the former Guangzhou Children's Hospital and the Guangzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital (originally named the Guangzhou Municipal Hospital for Women and Infants).

The hospital covers an area of 37,425 square meters and holds 1400 inpatient beds. It has three key clinical specialties of former National Ministry of Health, seven key clinical specialties and disciplines of Guangdong province and two key medical laboratories of Guangdong's 12th Five-Year Plan.

The hospital is an innovation and practice base for post-doctoral workers of Guangdong province. It is the teaching and practice base of the Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the Teaching Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University and Southern Medical University as well as the postgraduate training base of Jinan University. It is a women and children's specialized hospital active in disease prevention, healthcare, scientific research and teaching.

It passed the review of the joint commission of the international medical institutions (JCI) with excellent results in December 2012, the first hospital in South China to receive the JCL certification.
