Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (宝钢湛江钢铁有限公司, "Zhanjiang Iron & Steel" for short) is a subsidiary of Baosteel Group, which is based on Donghai island in Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province. Established on April 18, 2011, Zhanjiang Iron & Steel is a large-scale State-owned enterprise designed to meet demand for iron and steel in the South China and Southeast Asia markets.
The construction of the Zhanjiang Iron & Steel base is central to Baosteel's next venture, covering an area of 12.59 square kilometers. The iron and steel smelting process makes use of coke ovens, sintering, blast furnaces, converters and continuous casting. The rolling process uses hot rolling, cold rolling and thick plate production facilities. The project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on May 24, 2012 and was officially launched on May 31, 2012. The first phase of the project was completed and put into operation in July 2016.
The project targets South China and radiates outwards to Southeast Asia, meeting the market demand for medium and high-end carbon steel plate products. The project was designed to produce 8.23 million tons of molten iron, 8.93 million tons of molten steel and 6.89 million tons of steel per year. Its main products include hot rolled plates, cold rolled sheets, hot-dip galvanized plates and wide plates. It can also produce hot rolled high strength steel.
The project will strive to be simple, efficient and low-cost, promoting Zhanjiang Iron & Steel to become a modern, environmentally-sound and highly efficient international carbon steel base. It will be built into an eco-industrial park, as well as a demonstration area for the development of a circular economy, with clean production and efficient use of resources.
