The city of Yangzhou in Jiangsu province underwent a severe natural gas shortage last winter. The daily demands of residents, schools and hospitals were only barely met, and industrial and commercial enterprises suffered a great deal.
It was due to the rapid expansion of the natural gas market and continuously increasing gas consumption in Yangzhou; and it is urgent to establish a corresponding peak-shaving reserve and emergency system in the city.
The local government has greatly emphasized the issue and construction of a peak-shaving storage station for liquid natural gas (LNG) finally began on March 28.
The project was taken over by Yangzhou Zhongran Urban Gas Development Co, with a total investment of 30 million yuan ($4.8 million). It includes construction of six LNG storage tanks each with a volume of 150 cubic meters, some 260-square-meters of station , and another 800-square-meter fire reservoir.
The project is in its early stages and will be completed this November. By then, Yangzhou will be able to handle a substantial volume of LNG and greatly relieve its natural gas supply burden, especially during the winter peak season.
