Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds have recently been observed in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, according to news released by local media.
“The whites are the swans, and there are pairs of cranes and mandarin ducks,” said a police officer of the municipal forest public security bureau.
Thanks to abundant water resources, including lakes, rivers, reserves and wetlands, the area is perfect for many different kinds of migratory birds. White swans, wild geese, and red-crowned cranes are all regularly seen around the city between March and May each year.
The local authorities have made great efforts to protect these birds from humans in recent years.
Forest police officers increase their patrols during the winter-to-spring period.
“The breeding season for wild birds starts in March. Some of the newborn birds will get hurt during this period. But more and more local residents will call the police after discovering injured birds,” said Gao Fusuo, the director of the municipal forest public security bureau.
According to Gao, the police will rescue these birds and later release them into the wild.
Thanks to Hohhot's efforts to protect and maintain its environment, the city is fast becoming an excellent location for migratory birds to rest on their annual journeys.
