Wuxi in Jiangsu province recently published a book to honor the famous people born in its Xinwu district in the contemporary and modern age.
The book published by Phoenix Publishing House captures the biographies of 12 local celebrities from the culture and science circles. It is currently available on the market.
The celebrities include Qian Mu (1895-1990), a noted historian, educator and philosopher; Qian Shoutie (1897-1967), a famous calligrapher, painter and seal engraver; Qian Haiyue(1901-1968), a historian who is best known for his work "History of Southern Ming Dynasty"; Huang Huaijue (1904-1988), a master of stone inscriptions; Qian Linzhao (1906-1999), a famous scientist and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; political scientist Zou Wenhai (1908-1970); famous economist Qian Junrui (1908-1985); archaeologist Gu Tiefu(1908-1990); Qian Weichang (1912-2010), the only university president with life tenure in China; music educator Qian Renkang (1914-2013); Zou Ya(1916-1974),a painter and a pioneer of art publishing business of the new China; and Qian Lingxi (1916-2009), the most influential expert in applied mechanics in China.
"They are the epitome of the charm of local culture and their legendary experience and significant achievements not only showcase their endeavor and talent, but also the origin and connotation of the excellent culture here," said Wan Jiang, deputy director of the district's publicity department.
The biographies were published to promote their good morals and spirit as well as inspire the youth to work hard for their ideals, Wan added.
Located in southeast Wuxi, Xinwu district is famous for its long history and splendid culture. It has been a cradle of many world famous people since the end of the 19th century.
