CUHK (Shenzhen) launches institute for precision and regenerative medicine research

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) became home to another institute lead by Nobel Prize winners following the official launch of Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine on March 22.

The Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine was led by Aaron Ciechanover, an Israeli biologist who won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2004 for characterizing the method that cells use to degrade and recycle proteins using ubiquitin. The institute was the third one in CUHK (Shenzhen) led by Nobel Prize winners.

The lauching ceremony was attended by Gao Zimin, vice mayor of Shenzhen; Xu Yangsheng, president of CUHK (Shenzhen); Zhong Hai, deputy directory of Shenzhen science and technology innovation committee.

The institute will concentrate on precision treatments for cancer, contagious diseases and regenerative medicine that use stem cell therapy to cure stroke, Parkinson's disease and diabetes.

Gao delivered a speech at the ceremony, saying that the bio-industry and life sciences industry are the most promising industries in the 21st century and it is of great significance to boost the innovative development of biological medicine and precision medicine and take the highlands of a new round of scientific and technological revolution.

Xu noted that the freshly launched institute will cooperate with other institutes in the university and companies in Shenzhen to promote the commercialization of scientific achievements and play a key role in helping Shenzhen top the world in biological medicine and health industry and play a significant role in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
