Founded in 1927, Shanghai Conservatory of Music is the first music institution of higher education in China.
The school has more than 513 faculty members and around 3,000 students. Its leading disciplines are Composition, Conducting, Musicology, Voice and Opera, Piano, Chinese Traditional Instruments, Musical Education, Music Theatre and Orchestral Instruments, a major national discipline, which has been declared No.1 among the top echelon in China. It has 22 undergraduate programs, 28 postgraduate programs, 21 PhD programs, and one post-doctoral research center.
While putting emphasis on a theoretical approach to the study of music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music gives students opportunities for putting it into practice. The school has established many professional performing groups such as the Symphony Orchestra of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, National Music Orchestra and Choir, Percussion Ensemble and New Ensemble.
It emphasizes international cooperation and exchanges, and has relations with top music schools in the United States, France, England, Germany, Denmark, Russia, Australia, Czech, Australia and Japan. And, the school has had over 1,000 international students since its establishment, with a history of postgraduate education for foreign students going back to 1955.
