Founded in 1928, Guangxi University was designated as a "211 Project" university in 1999 and approved as a cosponsored university of the Ministry of Education and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region government in 2004.
Guangxi University has developed into a research university with 30 colleges. It boasts 97 undergraduate majors, master's degree programs in 36 primary disciplines and 171 sub-disciplines and doctoral degree programs in 8 primary disciplines and 45 sub-disciplines. The university also oversees seven postdoctoral research centers.
Since 1960, the university has cultivated a large number of graduates from nearly 40 countries and has established friendly ties with 165 universities or research institutes from 34 countries and regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Japan.
In addition, the university promotes the teaching of Mandarin as a foreign language to international students. In recent years, it has built two Confucius Institutes in Thailand's Suan Dusit Rajabhat University and Estonia's Tallinn University.
