The strawberry industry in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia has seen rapid growth recently with expanded crop fields and developed industrial chains.
The industry has become a fast-growing sector of the rural economy, with the annual revenue reaching 300 million yuan ($47.40 million) in 2017.
Further development of the agriculture industry has been promoted due to the achievements seen in Hohhot. The industry’s growth also has also increased the local farmers' income.
The rapid development of the strawberry industry in the city is mainly attributed to the contribution of science and technology specialists.
In 2012, the municipal government funded a system of science and technology specialists with 120 million yuan.
It sent 600 specialists to rural areas across the city to provide agriculture-related services and training to encourage the use of new technologies among farmers.
These specialists effectively evoked rural innovation and entrepreneurship that played critical roles in lifting local people out of poverty.
According to the government, Hohhot will continue to promote technological innovation and pursue innovation-driven development in the future.
