Senior citizens in Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region now have free access to comprehensive accident insurance services, according to a recent notice released by the Ordos authority for civil affairs.
Around 270,000 senior citizens will benefit from the policy, which came into effect on March 15.
According to the notice, every citizen of 60 years and above can receive subsidies totaling 20,000 yuan ($3,162) if circumstances caused by accidental injuries result in disability or death. In the latter case, the subsidies would be assumed by their families. Any medical expenses accrued on account of accidental injuries can also be compensated up to 5,000 yuan.
Qualified applicants under the policy will not have to go through any extraneous procedures. They need only call the service number and wait for a staff member of the insurance company to provide door-to-door service once they are in need of relevant services.
The Ordos government has partnered with the local branch of People's Insurance Company of China (PICC) to pay 15 yuan for each senior citizen every year.
