Shanghai needs to play a leading role in promoting the integrative development of the Yangtze River Delta region, said Li Qiang, Party secretary of Shanghai, at a panel discussion of the Shanghai delegation to the National People's Congress on March 6.
The Yangtze River Delta region is one of China's most active and open economic areas and has the country's strongest innovation capacity. It is also a significant intersection of the Belt and Road and the Yangtze River Economic Zone. The integrative development of the region is conducive to national development and China's participation in global competition.
To achieve the goal of integrative development, a consensus has been reached that focuses on five strategies – communication on regional planning, strategic coordination, specific cooperation, unified markets, and improved mechanisms.
A Yangtze River Delta region cooperation office has been built in Shanghai. According to Li, a three-year action plan will be made to give a clear timetable for the project. A meeting attended by major Yangtze River Delta region leaders is set to take place in the first half of this year in hopes of sorting out the project's top priorities.
