2018 sees Shenyang phase out pollution

Shenyang in Northeast China’s Liaoning province announced its intentions to strengthen policies on the prevention of air and water pollution in 2018, according to information from Shenyang Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau on March 12. 

As stated in this year’s targets for air quality in the city, the number of days with good air quality should increase 1 to 2 percentage points compared with that of last year. Meanwhile, the average concentration of PM 2.5 and PM 10 should decrease.

To achieve this goal, Shenyang plans to gradually phase out 365 coal-fired boilers. There are further plans to de-nitrate coal-fired boilers with a working capacity of 5,000 tons and seven coal-fired power plants. Meanwhile, Shenyang will strengthen emission monitoring on pollution sources from eight industrial enterprises, three service enterprises, as well as three traffic arteries. 

Additionally, Shenyang will put more efforts in the prevention and control of water pollution. According to the plan recently laid out, Shenyang will improve its water quality through comprehensive treatment of Hunhe River, Xihe River, Puhe Rive, Beisha River, and Zuoxiao River. Shenyang will also reform the five sewage treatment plants in Xiannv River, Shenshui Bay, Mantang River, as well as the ones in the city’s northern and western areas. Another three new sewage treatment plants will also start constructions.
