When recalling her travel experience in Haikou during the just-ended Spring Festival holiday, Wang Chaoyan, a tourist from Guizhou province, gave a thumps-up to local volunteers to show her gratitude.
"We were warmed by the kindness showed by the city as volunteers brought us cookies and hot water," Wang said.
A heavy fog hit Qiongzhou Strait, the only way for vehicles to drive in and out of Hainan using the ferry service, for eight days during Spring Festival, cutting off the ferry service and stranding thousands of holiday goers such as Wang and others in their cars on roads in Haikou, capital of tropical Hainan province.
Tens of thousands of local volunteers joined government officials to relieve travelers' anxiety.
