March is shaping up to be an exciting month across Hohhot thanks to the arrival of the Lantern Festival, which this year falls on March 2.

More than 80 events in eight main categories will be held from March 1 to 3, according to the local government. During the period, visitors can expect firework shows, lantern fairs and many colorful exhibitions.

Shehuo parades

Shehuo can be traced back to ancient Earth worship rituals believed to bring good harvests and subsequent fortune. With time, these primitive rituals evolved into Shehuo festivities which take place during traditional Chinese festivals, most notably Spring Festival and Lantern Festival.

Shehuo parades in Xincheng district are planned for March 2 and 3, with firework shows, riddle contests and lantern shows among the attractions.

Winter sports

A wide range of winter sports and activities are available in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, during Lantern Festival. Wuchuan and Horinger counties have organized a winter sports series to entertain visitors.

Folk events

Paper-cutting competitions and other events including Yangge dance and naoge, a Mongolian folk art, will charm visitors with a festive city atmosphere.

Theatrical performances

The Wulanmuqi Art Troupe and other at troupes will stage performances across Hohhot to provide a cultural feast for visitors.

Intangible cultural heritage shows

Intangible cultural heritage shows are in preparation for Horinger county. Inheritors of intangible cultural heritages will showcase their skills in paper-cutting, movable-type printing and leather painting. Visitors will also have the chance to try these folk arts.

Exhibitions

Calligraphy and other kinds of visual exhibitions will be held in the city to celebrate Lantern Festival.

Reading activities

The local government plans to promote reading during the period. The government of Yuyuan district will work with schools to promote Chinese culture, while Qingshuihe county will host a reading event to help people appreciate the importance of literacy.

Food expos

Visitors will be treated to festive delicacies like tangyuan, or glutinous rice balls, along with other delicacies from all parts of Inner Mongolia at food expos across Hohhot.
