Wuxi Furen Senior High School celebrates 100th anniversary

A Wuxi senior high school, whose graduates include former principal of Peking University Xu Zhihong and famous literary scholar Qian Zhongshu, is celebrating its 100th anniversary as it continues to teach valuable skills to talented students.

Founded in 1918, Wuxi Furen Senior High School was the first new-style middle school in Wuxi to mix Chinese and Western educational values.

Named after the Confucian idea of "meeting new friends through literature to improve our virtue", Wuxi Furen Senior High School is also noted for its significant contributions to educational progress in Jiangsu province.

Over 6,000 people from China and abroad gathered to celebrate its 100th anniversary on Jan 19, 2018 in the city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province.

Throughout its 100 years, the school has gained a reputation for its research and development of modern education and innovation. Its motto is "Live to Learn, Learn to Live", and it mixes aspects of traditional and Western values in order to accommodate different cultures and teach its students to embrace the world with an open mind.

Since its founding 100 years ago, Wuxi Furen Senior High School has changed location three times and its name four times, but has always remained committed to "liberal education and excellence". The school has also set up an educational fund in memory of its founder and first principal Yang Sijian.

"I think the key to the school's success lies with its outstanding teachers, who guided and inspired us to show enthusiasm for all subjects. Alumni of Furen High School are always proud of our alma mater", said former principal of Peking University Xu Zhihong.

Zhou Jianping, former principal of Wuxi Furen Senior High School, applauded the school's 100th anniversary, saying "The educational vitality at Furen is sparked by the fire in our hearts. When opportunities come along, we can both immediately embark on our career path as well as take the lead in this new age."

After a century of innovation and development, Wuxi Furen Senior High School is now ready to embark on its second hundred-year journey.

The school has called for all students and teachers to work together to make the school one of the best in China and increase its global influence.
