The Ordos Aquarium held a ceremony to mark its grand opening in the Dongsheng district of Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Feb 2.
Visited by tens of thousands of visitors on the very first day, the aquarium has already proven to be popular among local residents.
The aquarium is reported to be the largest, in terms of the number of species it holds, in western China. It occupies an area of around 17,000 square meters, holding 12,000 cubic meters of water.
The aquarium has attempted to combine aspects of tourism and the most popular elements of science, and has therefore developed six exhibition areas; zones for penguins, subsea tunnels, jellyfish, corals, tropical rainforests and marine-life performances.
More than 200 species can be found at the museum, including classes of penguins, saltwater fish, freshwater fish, sharks, coral reefs and dolphins.
Visitors can also watch live mermaid shows and underwater proposing shows at the aquarium.
