Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been focusing on a city-wide ecological restoration project for the past 10 years, leading to a noticeable improvement in local residents' levels of happiness.

Several milestones have been reached throughout the process, which has been carried out by local authorities over the 10 year period. The number of parks and quality of air have increased significantly.

By the end of 2017, the number of parks had increased to 705, including 24 newly built forest parks, 11 wetland parks, 33 mountain parks and 105 urban parks.

The city has set an ambitious goal to build 1,000 parks by 2020. The plethora of parks and other natural areas will lead to a better environment with fresher air, cleaner water, and an improved quality of life for local residents, who say they are happy with the changes that have been made to their city throughout the process.

"Just 10 years ago all we had were Hebin Qianling parks," said Li, a local resident, "Now we have too many to count, the options are endless."
