The 2017 State Preeminent Science and Technology Award Conference was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Jan 8.
Wang, a professor of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Hou Yunde, a virologist in China's molecular virus research, shared the award.

The State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, China's top science award with a prize of 5 million yuan ($769,000), was established in 2000. To date, twenty-nine scientists have received it.
Wang was born in Jilin in 1935 and graduated from Harbin Military Institute of Engineering (now Harbin Engineering University) in 1960. He joined the university to conduct research on energetic materials with important civilian and military applications.
An explosive expert, Wang was selected as an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999. During his career of 60 years, he has made great contribution to energetic materials study with a series of theories and applications.
He has cultivated a group of master's and doctoral candidates, and been awarded as an Excellent Graduate Advisor. He has also earned many other awards in science and technology, and is known as the "King of Explosives" in that academic field.
