Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, will establish an internet-based law court in the city's Haizhu district to use internet technology to hear cases and solve disputes, according to Wang Yong, president of Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court.
The announcement was made when Wang received an interview on Jan 14 at the Third Session of the 15th Guangzhou Municipal People's Congress.
Guangzhou's e-commerce trade volume ranks first in China and the city boasts many internet industry clusters, according to Wang, who also claimed that the city's courts handle increasingly large amount of cases involving the internet. Thus, the city plans to set up an internet court in Pazhou of Haizhu district, which is a hub for internet companies in Guangzhou.
According to statistics, Guangzhou's courts handled 16,000 to 17,000 cases concerning the internet in 2017, nearly 5,000 more than the amount of cases handled by courts in Hangzhou, which opened China's first online internet court in August 2017 to handle cases such as online trade disputes and copyright lawsuits.
