The 2018 Guangzhou New Year Poetry Recitals event was launched at Guangzhou Library on Jan 10, kindling the passion of Guangzhou's literary enthusiasts in the chilly winter.

The event consists of three poetry-recital parties at Guangzhou Library, two of which were held on Jan 10 and Jan 11 with the third to take place tonight.

Initiated by Guangzhou's poets and artists, the New Year Poetry Recitals has been held in the city every year since 2014 and have gradually become a very influential cultural event in South China.

This year's recitals are mainly focused on love poems, revealing contemporary people's lust, indulgence, suffering, weariness, and dilemmas when falling in love.

Many well-known poets are attending the recitals, reading their own poems or classic masterpieces by world-famous authors. Among them are Xi Chuan, a household name among Chinese intellectuals, and several Germans, Italians, and Spaniards who live in Guangzhou and read foreign poems in their mother tongue.

Some poems are adapted to songs and performed on site by local folk musicians. To create a more romantic atmosphere, modern dancers and cello players have also been invited to accompany the recitals.

The readings serve as a public platform for poetry lovers in Guangzhou to exchange thoughts and ideas. Large audiences have shown their great delight in welcoming the New Year in such a wonderful way.
