Guangzhou: a historic maritime city

Throughout history, Guangzhou has been a maritime city, a shipbuilding base, and a trade hub.

As early as 242 AD, Guangzhou served as a naval port. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it was China's largest port and produced hundreds of ships every year. Since the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), "guang ship" (a ship made in Guangzhou) has become a synonym for advanced warships and sea vessels in China.
