Biological products worth $20.1 million were exported from Xiamen port in 2017, an increase of 13.9 percent year-on-year and a new record high, according to the Xiamen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
The bio-pharmaceutical industry is one of the city's key emerging industries and the export of its biological products has maintained a steady increase in recent years.
Various in-vitro diagnostic reagents are the main exports with a value of $19.56 million; 97 percent of biological products' total export value.
Emerging markets, such as South Asia, Africa and South America, are their main destinations. The value of biological products exported to the Belt and Road countries and regions reached 7.71 million yuan in 2017, 38.3 percent of their total export value.
In order to support the development of Xiamen's biological and new pharmaceutical industries, the local inspection agency has reformed its quarantine supervision of exported biological products and established an online management system to accelerate examinations and approvals.
The agency has also assessed local pharmaceutical enterprises for risk and strengthened its supervision of high risk biological products.
