Food industry
The food industry is one of the four pillar industries in Harbin. It holds an important position as the first industry in the city to reach an annual output value of 100 billion yuan (15.17 billion).
Harbin's food industry covers the production and processing of grain, vegetables, drinks, cigarettes, meat and dairy products.
By the end of 2014, there were 434 large food processing enterprises in Harbin, with representative businesses such as Beidahuang Group and Jiusan Oils and Grains Industries Group Co. Harbin's food industry achieved an annual output value of 171.52 billion yuan in 2014.
In 2015, Harbin Food Industry Research Institute was established to provide technologies and highly-skilled workers to boost the upgrading and transformation of the food industry in the city.
Currently, a food industry cluster, involving food industrial parks in Harbin High and New Technology Industry Development Zone, Limin Economic Development Zone, Shuangcheng New Development Zone, Shangzhi Industrial Park and Binxi Economic and Technological Zone, is gradually taking shape in Harbin.
Pharmaceutical industry
Harbin's pharmaceutical industry is one of the ciry's pillar industries, with its large share of the domestic market due to its mature industry clusters, rich categories of medicines and cutting-edge pharmaceutical technologies.
In recent years, biopharmaceuticals have become a priority for Harbin's pharmaceutical industry and have experienced rapid growth, cultivating 50 intellectual property rights and obtaining 111 technology patents. Many of the sectors biotechnological achievements have reached advanced international level.
A complete biopharmaceutical industry chain has already formed in Harbin, covering research and development, production and marketing of more than 1,000 varieties of biomedical products. In 2017, the annual output value of the biopharmaceuticals industry is expected to reach 60 billion yuan ($9.12 billion). Harbin has also set a goal to achieve total output value in the industry of 100 billion yuan in 2019.
