As an essential part of Shenzhen Reading Month, a total of 120 young readers were selected from over 1,000 applying families to spend a night in tents reading books with their parents at the Second Primary School Affiliated to Shenzhen Futian Academy of Educational Sciences on the night of Nov. 10 through 11.
The event was organized by the Publicity Department of the Futian District Committee of the CPC, Futian Public Culture and Sports Development Center, Futian Environmental Protection and Water Supplies Bureau and Futian Education Bureau.
Apart from traditional paper books, many reading pavilions were set up on the campus providing environmentally friendly reading materials, such as audiobooks and multimedia storytelling.
For the reading night, tents, heat insulating pads, LED lights and floor lamps were distributed to the participating families. Under the guidance of professional teachers, they set up their tents by themselves and experienced a beautiful night of reading and camping out with the family.
To strengthen their environmental protection awareness, each family received a rubbish bag from the organizing committee and the young readers learned to classify rubbish. The family that produced the least garbage was given a surprise gift by the organizing committee.
The reading night was unveiled in a cultural show which started by playing the feature program of Shenzhen Reading Month produced by HKSTV, which reviewed the wonderful journey that Shenzhen Reading Month has gone through.
At eight in the evening, an outdoor movie screening and book exchange event were held. All of the participating families went to the sports field of the school to watch the classic movie "Lotus Lantern" where they enjoyed the blend of the music from the movie with the chirping of insects.
