Construction began on the 600-million-yuan ($91 million) Surgery Building of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University on Dec 16. It is expected to come into service with 900 inpatient beds and first-class medical facilities by 2020.
With a floorage of 68,500 sqm, the building on East Meihua Road in New Xiangzhou will have 25 floors above ground and one below. Facilities include surgery centers, nursing and intensive care units (ICU), and medico-technical rooms. Design of a multi-story parking lot has already been approved with construction under way at the beginning of 2018.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of operations at what is known locally as Zhongda 5th Hospital. For more than a decade, it has grown into a comprehensive medical institution that combines medicine, education, and research. With an integrated disciplinary structure and talent resources, the hospital leads the clinical medicine of the Zhuhai-Zhongshan-Jiangmen Economic Circle in terms of treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular, neoplastic, and infectious diseases.

Currently, the hospital is bolstering its Organ Transplant Department as a top-drawer discipline, endeavoring to soon become the first hospital in Zhuhai so-qualified. The move will also contribute to development in emergency and severe diseases, general surgery, perinatal medical, and medical imaging disciplines.
The plan is to break into the top 30 high-grade hospitals in Guangdong Province by the end of 2018. Projected to have 3,000 inpatient beds, it intends to become a Zhuhai-based regional medical center serving cities on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary and opening to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
Luo Jun, president of Sun Yat-sen University; Zhuhai Mayor Yao Yisheng; Chen Ying, executive vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Zhuhai Municipal People's Congress; and Vice Mayor Yan Wu attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
