Liangzhu Culture Park

Located in the Yinzhou district of Ningbo, Liangzhu Culture Park (梁祝文化公园) was rated as a national 4A-level tourist spot, the second highest level recognized by China's National Tourism Administration in 2006.

The park is dedicated to the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai or the Butterfly Lovers, a tale of doomed romance in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) sometimes characterized as China's Romeo and Juliet.

Zhu Yingtai is the strong-willed daughter of a wealthy family who, at a time when girls were not allowed to attend school, disguises herself as a boy to get a proper education. She soon falls for a male schoolmate named Liang Shanbo who remains unaware of his good friend's true gender until she is summoned to return home.

Liang's affection turns to blazing passion, but his hope of marrying Zhu is thwarted by her father, who plans to wed his daughter to the son of a rich family. However, Zhu expresses her love for Liang, which eventually draws fatal attention to the lover. In winter, Zhu mourns over Liang's grave where the lovers are transformed into butterflies and eternally united.

The temple of Liang Shanbo, which was built in 397, has a history of more than 1600 years. Over the years of instability, the temple experienced rise and fall. With the temple of Liang Shanbo as the main body and the story of Liang-Zhu as the main clue, the Liangzhu Culture Park is composed of a good many scenic spots, including Kwan-yin Hall, Spouse Bridge, Conjugal Love Pavilion, Lotus Pond, Nine Dragon Pool, Dragon Valvule Pavilion, Bailing (One Hundred Year Old) Road, the Statue of Liang and Zhu Transformed into Butterflies, the Large-scale Fountain Square, Wansong (Ten Thousand Pines) College and Sacred Gentleman Liang's Temple.
