Ningbo has navigable waterways of 1262 km in length. The 252-km-long Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal connects with Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and can accommodate 40-tonnage vessels.

The passenger, car ferries and express passenger ships from Ningbo to Shanghai and Zhousan have greatly promoted the economic exchanges and passenger transportation between these places.

Railway

Ningbo has established a railway network capable of reaching almost all cities in China. Cities to the north and northwest of Ningbo, such as Shanghai and Nanjing, can be reached by the Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway, Nanjing-Hangzhou Railway and the Shanghai-Ningbo Railway. Xiamen, Guangzhou and other southern cities can be accessed through the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Railway. Cities to the southwest and central China can be reached by the Ningbo-Jinhua Railway and Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway, respectively.

Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway

Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway links to Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway, and extends 147 kilometers in length, 66.5 km of which lie within the city limits of Ningbo.

The double-track line (the Ningbo section of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway) was completed in 2001, with a 23-km-long feeder line from Ningbo to the Zhenhai Harbor Area and a 35.5-km-long feeder line from Ningbo to Beilun Harbor.

The railway is designed to accommodate 42.3 pairs of trains, including 12 pairs of passenger trains, with an annual freight capacity of 12 million tons.

Ningbo North Railway Station

Ningbo North Railway Station is a national A level freight terminal. It spans an area of 357,000 square meters, and provides 648 stack points, 15 loading lines and 16 special railway tracks. The station is capable of handling full-carloads, less-than-carload transportation, containerized transportation and water-land combination transportation. It plays an important role in goods collection and distribution between Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou and other coastal areas in eastern Zhejiang province.

Roadway

Ningbo's road network stretches 5,506 km in length, including 184 km of expressways and 3,553 km of national and provincial highways. The highway density is 56 km per 100 sq km. Springing from its harbors, Ningbo's roadways radiate outwards in all directions toward other cities and towns forming a large traffic network.

Ningbo's main highways include the national highway No 329, which links Hangzhou and Zhoushan, the provincial highway No 34, which runs across Taizhou and Wenzhou, as well as provincial highway No 36, which runs through Shaoxin and Jinhua.

Subway

Ningbo has two urban rail transit lines currently in operation — Line 1 and Line 2, and four more will open in the next few years. After being put into full operation, the 247.5-kilometer network will have 20 transit stations.

Ningbo subway adopts a distance-based fare system. The starting fare for a distance up to 4 km is fixed at 2 yuan ($0.3) while the maximum is 6 yuan.

Bus

There are more than 8,500 buses operating on 1,194 routes in Ningbo, which extend more than 20,000 kilometers.

Shared bike

Four bike-sharing companies — Hellobike, Mobike, ofo and U-Bicycle — have launched more than 200,000 shared bikes in Ningbo, enabling convenient trips for local residents.

Smart transportation application system

"Ningbo Pass", released to the public in September 2013, is a kind of travel information service system delivered directly to your mobile phone. It covers almost all aspects of transportation, including information on pedestrian and vehicle traffic, roads, ships and ports. "Ningbo Pass" has 21 functions, such as real-time bus information, a public bicycle system, transit traffic updates, train ticket balance, air traffic, express delivery checks, vehicle repair and driving lessons, travel planning, traffic violation enquiry, accident reports and taxi services.

The traffic congestion index system for Ningbo's central urban area integrates high-definition video information from about 300 street corners around the central urban area and the GPS data from taxis, and can be used to evaluate the traffic index from all major areas of the urban area.

A smart parking guidance system has been established to tackle the problems of parking cars. As of 2014, the parking guidance system has incorporated 16 parking lots in Haishu district and five in Jiangbei district. With the help of the system, car owners have access to such information as the location of parking lots and the amount of available parking spaces.
