Baotou Aluminum Industrial Park (包头铝业产业园区) was approved by Ministry of Environment Protection of the People’s Republic of China in 2003 and was designated as a provincial industrial park in 2006. In 2012, the park’s planning area was increased from 20 to 70 square kilometers, according to the government.
As of 2014, the park’s annual industrial output reached 51 billion yuan ($7.71 billion), and the sales revenue achieved 51.3 billion yuan. Aluminum industry, the featured leading industry of the park, has initially formed five relevant industrial chains.
In 2014, the park was on the list of the 5th batch of national "urban mining" demonstration base, making it the only one of this kind in Inner Mongolia.
It has formed featured industrial chains of "scrap iron and steel processing and utilization" and "aluminum recycling utilization". In addition, it planned to develop several new industrial chains for the processing and utilization of scraped cars, waste household appliances, and the comprehensive utilization of industry and construction waste.
