Railways and roads that connect to the entire country
Sanmenxia has formed a full-fledged transportation network based on highways and roads in counties and villages, conveniently connecting all the major cities in China. Up to the end of 2016, the total road length of the city exceeded 10,000 kilometers with 311.6 km of highways. The city is also equipped with two national railways.
Steady water transportation
Sanmenxia completed transporting 114,000 passengers in 2016. At present, it has 37 ships, including 24 for transporting goods and eight for people.
Education
Complete education system
Sanmenxia has a complete education system from pre–school to higher education, as well as all types of training programs. There are a number of schools, including private and public.
In 2016, the city had 713 schools for basic education, including 19 high schools, 106 middle schools and 234 primary schools. It had 22 vocational colleges, 729 training institutes, 265 private schools and 254 private kindergartens.
History and Culture
Established in 1957, Sanmenxia is a city developed around the construction of the first dam along the Yellow River – the Sanmenxia Great Dam. In Chinese folk tales, it is said that when King Dayu combated a flood, he chiseled the Dragon Gate and constructed a firm rock in the midstream of the Yellow River, thus forming three gates along the river: people's gate, ghost's gate and god's gate. Sanmenxia, "three gates valley" in literal translation, derives its name from this tale.
Sanmenxia boasts many places of interest. Currently, the city has more than 713 cultural relic sites, among which six are under the national-level protection, 38 are under provincial level, 28 city level and 641 county level. There are more than 70,000 pieces of cultural relics throughout all the libraries and museums in Sanmenxia, 203 of which are listed as first grade, 681 are second grade and 6,801 are third grade.
Health care services
Up to the end of 2016, Sanmenxia had 1,915 hospitals and clinics, including 53 hospitals, 1,830 medical institutes, 27 professional medical institutes and 5 other clinics. The number of professional doctors in the city totaled 5,428 and registered nurses equaled 5,543.
Science and technology industry
In 2016, Sanmenxia had two counties, Lingbao and Mianchi, listed as national science and technology advancement units, and it was rewarded as a national advanced city in science and technology.
Up to the end of 2016, the added value of high and new industry in Sanmenxia totaled 10.47 billion yuan ($1.58 billion). The city had 38 registered high and new enterprises and another 150 enterprises were considered involved in the high and new industry, with 305 products in 97 categories. During the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), more than 200 enterprises in Sanmenxia had netted profits and 127 projects in the city gained provincial awards for scientific and technological advancement.
At the end of 2016, Sanmenxia had one provincial agricultural science park, two provincial traditional Chinese medicine modernization demonstration parks, eight city-level demonstration parks, and 50-plus agricultural science demonstration bases.
