Taibo Temple Fair
Meicun in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, is a cradle of Wu culture with a history of over 3,200 years.
The ninth day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar marks the traditional festival when Meicun people pay tribute to Taibo, the son of King Tai of the Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century to 256 BC) who brought central plains culture, etiquette and agriculture to the region, creating the origin of Wu culture.
The Taibo Temple Fair, the biggest temple fair in Jiangnan area (a region on the southern bank of the lower Yangtze River), was listed among the first batch of intangible cultural heritages of Wuxi in December 2007. In July 2009, the event was named as one of Jiangsu's intangible cultural heritages.
The eight-day event lasts until Lantern Festival, and features traditional trading fairs, demonstrations of intangible cultural heritages and folk art, and public cultural activities.
