4. Fine Environment
Yangzhou, boasting a picturesque eco-environment, is one of the National Model Cities of Environmental Protection, National Forest City, National Ecologic City, National Sanitary City, and a city recognized as a United Nation's Habitat Scroll of Honor.
At present, Yangzhou has an urban built-up area green rate of 41.5 percent and a green coverage of 43.7 percent, per capita park green area reaches 18.35 sq m. Yangzhou is pushing forward the construction of an urban park system which integrates functions such as ecological preservation, exercising, social networking, cultural construction, civil defense, and pedestrian networks.
More than 140 parks have been built and opened so far. Every urban resident can reach a municipal park in 10 minutes by car, a district park in 10 minutes by bicycle, and a community park in 10 minutes by walk, forming a unique city picture. The city is encircled with gardens and a perfect integration between the city and waters. The ratio of urban drinking water quality up to standard has reached 100 percent.
Yangzhou is now accelerating its pace in the construction of the Jianghuai Ecological Corridor and towns along it with special characteristics. A 20 billion yuan fund has been set up for the construction of Jianghuai Ecological Corridor and a 10 billion yuan fund for the construction of "China Insurance Investment– Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Urban and Rural Areas Ecology", which focuses on the implementation of six pilot projects such as ecological restoration, traffic construction, environmental protection and foundation consolidation, environmental remediation, green industry cultivation, characteristic towns building, and beautiful countryside construction. It creates a broad space for industrial cooperation and model innovation.
Yangzhou is advanced in education, with its enrollment rate for senior high schools standing at 100 percent and that of colleges and universities up to 94.3 percent in recent years. Yangzhou University is a key comprehensive university of provincial level. It took the lead in the merger of universities, known as the banner of reform among China's colleges and universities. Yangzhou High School, with a history of more than 100 years, is well known all over the country. Having nine Grade-III hospitals, four of which being the Grade-III Class-A hospitals, Yangzhou features well-developed medical facilities. Yangzhou also boasts sound public security, and has been appraised as an advanced city for its excellent public security control for several consecutive years.
