Security system stops drones from entering restricted airspace

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport installed an anti-drone security system, the first of its kind in China, on Nov 23, to protect restricted airspace.

The Cangqin Drone Detection and Defense System (Cangqin System) consists of two main parts, an alarm that can detect drones in as-quick-as three seconds and a jamming system which will force illegally flying drones to return or land on the ground.

The jamming system is based on electromagnetic wave interference technology and can adjust the frequency and direction of interference commensurately with the location and remote control frequency of the drone it has detected. It is capable of detecting and driving away illegal air trespassers in a perimeter of eight kilometers and even 13 kilometers in open spaces.

According to technicians at the airport, the system can work effectively both in the daytime and at night and will not cause any side effects to communications equipment and other devices at the airport.

In early September last year, a drone entered restricted airspace at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, sparking great concerns over flight safety. A month later, the airport decided to launch a project to develop a drone-intercept system with the newly-launched Cangqin System the achievement of the project.

In June this year, Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department also issued regulations to ban the flying of drones within 10 kilometers on both sides of the centerline of airports and 20 kilometers on both sides of runways.
