The Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Museum was established in July, 1953. It was the first memorial museum for a celebrity since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. In 2002, the Shaoxing government carried out a project for historical block protection in this area. After undergoing reconstruction and restoration work for several years, this place has now become a block that carries rich historical elements, deep cultural connotations and typical traditional architectural style.

Spanning a total area of 50 acres, with a core area of 28.9 acres, the Former Residence of Lu Xun not only comprises of the old house of Lu Xun, his family house, Sanwei Study (an old-style private school where Lu Xun studied in childhood) and Baicao Garden, but also houses the restored Xintaimeng Family House of Zhou, the Family House of Shou, the Tugu Temple, the folklore park in Lu Xun's works and other ancient architecture related to Lu Xun. The scenic area boasts Shaoxing style and the characteristics prevalent in Lu's period, and recreates Xianheng Restaurant, Dongchang Fangkou, Tazi Bridge, Changqing Temple, Hengji Pawnshop and other scenic spots that were mentioned in Lu’s works.

Lu Xun's Hometown has been open to the public for free since June 1, 2008. The number of visitors has being on a yearly increasing. In recent years, the annual number of domestic and foreign visitors has exceeded 2 million every year.
