On Oct 23, a conference celebrating the 24th Sanitation Workers' Day in Guangdong province was held in Shenzhen Guanhu Street to honor those "urban beauticians" dedicated to the cleanliness of the city.
Some well-located junk houses have been fitted with air conditioning, water dispensers and medical kits to serve as post houses for sanitation workers. So far in Guanhu Street, there are already five post houses and 50 rest stops at the workers' disposal.
There're more than 1,000 sanitation workers in Guanhu Street. In addition to Sanitation Workers' Day, Guanhu holds regular events for workers in every major festival, such as a Shenzhen one-day tour for the workers and their children. There’re even citizens providing free food and tea for them in appreciation of their hard work.
Oct 26 has been a special day for sanitation workers since 1987. Starting in Heilongjiang province, Sanitation Workers' Day has been observed in 14 provinces and municipalities directly under the central government and autonomous regions, with Guangdong being one of them.
