Guangzhou report reveals new energy vehicle push for 2020

The municipal government of the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou released a work report on Nov 3, revealing that the city will be able to make 300,000 new energy vehicles annually by 2020 with an output value of 100 billion yuan ($15 billion).

The report said the government will work hard towards making vehicles all-electric, smart and internet-connected and redouble its efforts on new car research and development, design and manufacturing. By the end of 2020, the city will be home to two-to-three car companies with annual turnovers reaching 1 million yuan each, and will have finished building a world-class "new energy plus internet-connected vehicles" industry cluster.

Guangzhou will also strive to make all its buses all-electric, and promote the use of new energy vehicles in the taxi industry, for Party and government offices, logistics as well as guiding citizens to buy electric cars.

By the end of 2020, more than 200,000 new energy vehicles will be on the roads in Guangzhou, with 170,000 of them privately owned or leased, and 30,000 belonging to the industries of public transportation, taxi companies and environment sanitation department.

The work report also details Guangzhou's plans to build charging facilities. By the end of 2018, Guangzhou will have established a well-regulated charging facilities construction system with ample supporting policies and be home to 70,000 charging piles. By 2020, the total number of charging piles in Guangzhou is estimated to reach 100,000.
