Historic Jinan is located south of the Yellow River in northwestern Shandong with famous Mount Tai on its south side. The 2,700-year-old city is the birthplace of Longshan Culture, also referred as Black Pottery Culture, which stood out in late Neolithic cultures from about 3000 to 1900 bce.

Among the first-batch Top Tourist Cities of China, Jinan has various springs as its most distinctive calling card, thus its namesake "City of Springs." Popular attractions include Spouting Spring, Daming Lake, Furong (Water Lily) Street, Black Tiger Spring, Red Leaves Valley, and Thousand-Buddha Mt (Qianfo Shan) which contains the ruins of Emperor Shun, a legendary leader of China living before 2000 bce.

Popular cultural sites include Great Wall of Qi -- the oldest original section of the Great Wall in China; Four-Gate Pagoda at Shentong Temple in Liubu Town erected in the Sui Dynasty (581-618 ce); and colored Arhat sculptures in Lingyan Temple as characteristic Song Dynasty (960-1279 ce) artwork.
