More than 2.8 million "Golden Week" holiday travellers passed through Xiamen, Fujian province via road, rail, air and water during the eight-day festival, a 20 percent increase year-on-year.

According to the municipal traffic operation information command center, railways in particular claimed a significant increase in passenger throughput during the holiday.

The center's statistics show that the arrivals and departures by rail hit some 1.8 million travellers, an increase of 35 percent year-on-year.

High-speed trains from Xiamen travel to 17 major city destinations throughout the country, which explains why Xiamen's passenger number steadily increases year by year, according to the Xiamen railway department.

Some 580,000 passengers arrived and departed by air, an increase of 10 percent year-on-year.

Considering the increase in passenger numbers and the relatively small increase in flights, airline seat occupancy has been significantly improved.

The Xiamen-Kinmen County (to the west of Taiwan Strait) ferry route carried about 46,000 passengers, a 20 percent year-on-year, and is still the first choice for tourists from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to cross the strait.
