An urban Zhuhai plan calls for a 1.7-km extension of Lovers Avenue with the construction of an F-segment subordinate line. This purportedly would result in the world's longest seaside road.

Stretching 18 km along the coastline of Zhuhai's eastern downtown in Xiangzhou District, Lovers Avenue is one of the city's striking name cards, rated as a "Top 10 Landscape in the Pearl River Delta."

The ambition to polish the image was initiated in 2009, setting avenue length at about 55 km to be achieved by northward and westward extensions. The design is in line with a blueprint for the development of the main axis of the city's East Wing.

The 9.3-km dual four-lane waterfront section of South Lovers Avenue between Gongbei Port and Hengqin Bridge will undergo foundation treatment, traffic node construction, roadside landscaping, and revetment upgrades. A park will be created along the route.

Details concerning the location of the F Segment were recently announced by the Housing & Urban-Rural Planning & Construction Bureau. It will connect with Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity MRT Gongbei Station and Zhuhai-Macao Cross-Border Industrial Park.

The F Segment will not only add a new aesthetic landscape but also ease traffic pressure on Changsheng Road and the Changsheng Bridge in Gongbei, a project head said.

The main-line project is under way with 40 percent completed, according to the project head. The sections, totaling more than 9 km, incorporate two-way traffic in six lanes starting from Gongbei's Macao Viewing Point, running along Changsheng Road, crossing the Changsheng Bridge, and ending at Nanwan Avenue at the north end of Hengqin Bridge.

A spokesman for the construction company said the project will form multiple ways to go from Gongbei to Hengqin New Area. The main and subordinate lines boast complementary functions; the subordinate sections add more to city beautification and traffic circulation, he added.
