Doumen native Wu Shuijiao claimed the title of the women's 100m hurdles at 12.97 seconds during the 13th Chinese National Games on Sept 4, bringing home to Zhuhai yet another golden medal.

Also a Doumen native, Li Dongjian, championed men's 2000m coxless pair competition in Rowing on Aug 29. He enrolled in Doumen Teens Amateur Sports School in 2004 and was selected to the national team three years later.

Known as China's "mini-olympics," the 13th National Games takes place from Aug 27 to Sept 8 in North China's Tianjin municipality.

Regarded as the strongest title contender for the 100m hurdles, Wu lived up to expectations and won the honor for Guangdong and her hometown.

As an athlete from Zhuhai, Wu was selected by Doumen District to enter the track and field team of the Zhuhai Sports School in 2003.

Her advantages lie in speed, excellent skills, strong rhythm, consistency in movements between and above hurdles, and offensive awareness, which were fully reflected soon after she entered the school.

With Dai Jianhua as coach, she won the women's 100m hurdles in the 2006 Guangdong Provincial Games, emerging as another rising star after Feng Yun and Zhu Shuiying -- two other renowned female hurdlers nurtured in Zhuhai. In 2009, she joined the Guangdong track and field team and took part in national and international competitions afterwards.

Wu participated in the women's 100m hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and won the title of women's 100m hurdles at the 2016 and 2017 National Athletics Championships.

Her personal best for the 100m hurdles was 12.72 seconds set at the 2014 Asian Games, where she also took gold.
