Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county organized a charity event on Aug 19 to raise funds for local less well-off college students.
The environment and transport links in the mountainous county makes it difficult for agriculture and other industries to thrive, and so approximately 66,600 people across 60 villages live in poverty.
To help freshmen to pay their tuition fees, the county held a week-long donation activity, bringing in 1.41 million yuan ($211,714) from 20 enterprises and people from all walks of life to fund 474 students.
The activity helps to provide education for Huanjiang students, said Huang Rongbiao, Party secretary of Huanjiang county. He extended his hopes that the students will make earnest efforts to achieve well and give back to society in the future.
