Peking Opera Theater of Shanxi Province

The predecessor of the Peking Theater Opera of Shanxi Province was Tianjin Red-wind Peking Opera Society. It moved to Shanxi in 1956 and was renamed Taiyuan Peking Opera Society, and in 1968 it was renamed as Shanxi Peking Opera Theater.

The Theater is devoted not only to performing the traditional Chinese operas such as: "Yu Tang Chun, "JinYunu", "Si Iang Visiting His Mother,"King Xiangyu's Farewell to His Concubine and So on, but also to creating new operas. "General Cai E and Xiao Fengxian, "for example, won the Shanxi excellent drama award in 1981. In 1992, its newly adapted historical play "Meng Lijun" won the prize awarded by the Ministry of Culture; in 1995, newly adapted historical play "Golden valley Garden won the prize at the lst China Peking Opera Art Festival. In l998, the newly adapted historical play "The Big-foot Queen won the excellent program prize at the 2nd China Peking Opera Art Festival. There are also other highly praised plays such as: "Cowhand Point at", "The story of the Dargon Town", and "Uhu! The Slave", etc.

The Theater possesses well-known first-class artists as follows: Ren Xiuyun.,Cao Fosheng. Bai Chengzong, Zhao Kunxiang, Li Shengsu and Zhao Wanru.
