The Shanghai government held a special job fair for Chinese graduates returning to the mainland after finishing degrees at the world's top overseas universities on Aug 16.

More than 600 returning graduates from six top UK and US universities — University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, London School of Economics and Political Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Columbia University — attended the event.

A total of 24 State-owned enterprises and institutes and 25 multinational companies, including Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, SAIC Motor, KPMG, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co and Unilever, offered posts to these returning talents.

Shanghai municipal human resources and social security bureau, the fair's organizer, said the event is aimed at providing a convenient talent exchange platform for employers in Shanghai. Since it was launched in 2009, more than 4,000 returning graduates have found jobs in Shanghai through the fair.

To achieve its goal of growing into a global scientific and innovative hub, Shanghai has introduced a string of policies to build its talent pool and create favorable business environment.

The incentives have helped make the city increasingly attractive to high-level talents. More than 140,000 graduates of overseas universities are currently working or run their own businesses in Shanghai, according to government estimates. Returning graduates have founded more than 5,000 start-ups in Shanghai with a combined registered investment of $780 million.
