The tower was first built in 1598 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to honor the first scholar of the time, and encourage more scholars to follow his example. So far, the tower has been reconstructed six times.
The scenic spot includes Fuyu Bridge connecting the two banks of Nanming River, the main pavilion and Cuiwei Garden.
For 400 years, the tower has been a symbol of Guiyang, witnessing the city's history and ongoing development. It was listed as an important heritage site under State protection by the State Council in 2006.
