The coastal city of Yantai in East China's Shandong province aims to develop more than 96 nation-renowned brands by 2020, according to a guideline issued by the municipal government.
The guideline sets specific goals to boost the profile of local brands in the industry, agriculture and services sectors.
Some of the products the city is looking to promote include Yantai apples, cherries, abalone and holothurian.

At least eight local companies should also be included in China’s 500 Most Valuable Brands list by the same year, according to the guideline.
The guideline sets out a number of measures to help the city achieve these targets, including strengthening its brand credit construction and establishing a blacklist to name and shame dishonest enterprises.
To create a good environment for brand development, the city will strengthen law enforcement and crack down on counterfeit or poor quality products.
